….I flunked music at school and I never went to music college! (shhhh!).

In fact, I was a graphic designer for years, and just DJed on the side.

So, I knew something had to change (after all, a good definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results!).

This led me on a journey of developing my own system for producing music.

My First Big Break

And I didn’t realise it at the time, but using this system actually led me to getting my first real break…

I was in a cheap traveller’s hostel in Cairns in Australia (a very hot, tropical place), and I knew I wanted to work with a particular singer.

She had featured on many of my favourite dance records over the years (her name is Katherine Ellis. She’s done a LOT).

So, I Googled her name, and – lo and behold – there was a competition to remix a new track of hers.

Ah, the fates had conspired to help me!

So, I said to myself – out loud – "I’m going to win this competition".

And I meant it.

So I sat down for two days, and remixed Katherine’s track on my laptop with a pair of headphones, an old copy of Propellerheads Reason, and this “system” I had developed.

That's it.

The difference this time was, though, I wouldn’t accept anything less than the absolute best, so my skills reached a new level in that short space of time.

I had a reference track for how loud and fat I wanted it to sound (Benny Benassi’s "Satisfaction"), and I did not stop until I had achieved it.

Against hundreds of other entries.

The fact of the matter is, I had left myself no choice BUT to step up and win.
