BUT...Here's my Confession

….I flunked music at school and I never went to music college! (shhhh!).

In fact, I was a graphic designer for years, and just DJed on the side.

That’s the big secret here. If you’re NOT a naturally talented musical genius you can still perform like one.

That’s what successful “hackers” like me know and that’s what we do that you likely don’t.

I take what I’ve learned from my favourite artists, follow a few workflow hacks, then fill in my own elements to come up with something “original”.

Seriously.

It’s a massive subject, and with so many tutorials out there it’s very easy to go down a rabbit hole and lose sight of the most important thing.

I’ve been there countless times, and to be honest, it felt like...

Failure after failure!

I’d have an idea for a track, make it into an 8-bar loop, and think it could be a banger – if only I could just arrange it into a full tune.

After looping it hundreds of times, tweaking the hi-hats or the bass sound for a couple of hours, I’d lose interest (or get too frustrated) and never finish it.

There was always just something “missing”. It was always a bit flat…a bit “meh”.

Think about it….How many times have you spent 3, 4 or even 20 hours on a track before deciding to ditch it because it’s never going to work?

If you're anything like me, the answer is probably more than you'd like to admit.

(In fact, this frustration caused me to almost give up on music altogether a few times ).

But the pull to keep creating music was too strong.

So, I knew something had to change (after all, a good definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results!).

This led me on a journey of developing my own system for producing music.

My First Big Break

And I didn’t realise it at the time, but using this system actually led me to getting my first real break…

I was in a cheap traveller’s hostel in Cairns in Australia (a very hot, tropical place), and I knew I wanted to work with a particular singer.

She had featured on many of my favourite dance records over the years (her name is Katherine Ellis. She’s done a LOT).

So, I Googled her name, and – lo and behold – there was a competition to remix a new track of hers.

Ah, the fates had conspired to help me!

So, I said to myself – out loud – "I’m going to win this competition".

And I meant it.

So I sat down for two days, and remixed Katherine’s track on my laptop with a pair of headphones, an old copy of Propellerheads Reason, and this “system” I had developed.

That's it.

The difference this time was, though, I wouldn’t accept anything less than the absolute best, so my skills reached a new level in that short space of time.

I had a reference track for how loud and fat I wanted it to sound (Benny Benassi’s "Satisfaction"), and I did not stop until I had achieved it.

And I won.

Against hundreds of other entries.

(A few months later I actually won about $5000 worth of equipment in another remix competition against THOUSANDS of other entries, but that’s another story…).

I Had No Choice!

The fact of the matter is, I had left myself no choice BUT to step up and win.

But I also knew – from bitter experience – that effort alone wasn’t going to cut it.

I had to improve. Exponentially. And fast.

And that’s where my system came into play…

Yes, I already had a lot of experience and a few small "wins" in the past, but that was by far the best, most "pro-sounding" track I had ever produced to that point – no doubt – AND...

On the back of winning that competition…

I got my first record deal, my first manager AND my first paid remix work based on the system I developed…

So what is the system I use and teach?
